On May 16, 1943 the USS ESSEX CV 9 reported to the Commander U. S. Pacific Fleet for duty. Her record since then is a thrilling story of the Navy's offensive action and striking power in the westward march to Japan and final victory at Tokyo on August 15, 1945.
"The only reason for the existence of the Essex, now and in the future, is to destroy the Germans, Italians, and Japanese where and when we can seek them out. This will require many weeks and months of unremitting toil and vigilance. Subject to the limitations imposed by this primary objective, I shall endeavor to make you as comfortable and as happy as may be. It is my intention and expectation that between us we shall make the name USS ESSEX CV 9 carry fear and destruction to our enemies, with praise of our friends, and be an everlasting credit to our country and our flag". Captain D. B. Duncan, USN, December 31, 1942
Please take the time to read through the list of actions that the USS ESSEX CV 9 was involved in. For the most part there is only a few days or weeks between combat actions. These sailors made constant sacrifices for their country. Endured incredible and unimaginable hardships. For this fact alone they are all, "American Heroes". |
