| Australia (June 28, 2009) - Commodore,
Amphibious Squadron Eleven (PHIBRON-11) Capt. Donald Schmieley speaks to
members of the Australian media on the flight deck of the forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2). The ships of
PHIBRON-11 and the embarked 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit are in preparation for exercise Talisman Saber 2009, a biennial, join, combined
exercise sponsored by U.S. Pacific Command and the Australian Defense Force that focuses on the planning and execution of contingency response
operations. Essex is commanded by Capt. Brent Canady and the lead ship of the only forward-deployed U.S. Amphibious Ready Group and serves as
the flagship for CTF 76, the Navy's only forward-deployed amphibious force commander. Task Force 76 is headquartered at White Beach Naval
Facility, Okinawa, Japan, with a detachment in Sasebo, Japan.

Australia (June 28, 2009) - A crowd gathers
on Trinity wharf pier for a view of amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) during a scheduled port visit. Essex is underway for summer
deployment and scheduled to participate in military exercise Talisman Saber 2009 with the Australian Defense. Essex, commanded by Capt. Brent
Canady, is the lead ship of the only forward-deployed expeditionary strike group and serves as the flagship for CTF 76, the Navy's only
forward-deployed amphibious force commander. Task Force 76 is headquartered at White Beach Naval Facility, Okinawa, Japan, with a
detachment in Sasebo, Japan.
