ABOARD USS ESSEX AT SEA

Essex is currently underway, with the 31st MEU embarked, participating in Special Operations Capable Exercise (SOCEX). ABOARD USS ESSEX AT SEA

USS Essex (LHD 2) aviation boatswain's mates gas up a CH-46 Sea Knight attached to the Aviation Combat Element of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) on the ship's flight deck to prepare the helicopter for the days mission on Sept. 22. Essex is currently underway, with the 31st MEU embarked, participating in Special Operations Capable Exercise (SOCEX). During SOCEX, the 31st MEU is certified as Special Operations Capable, which it tells our military leaders that the Blue/Green team is capable of executing several diverse missions, from humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts, to full-scale combat operation. Air Traffic Controller (AC) 2nd Class John J. Jones monitors the SPN-43 Precision Approach Radar from USS Essex's (LHD 2) helicopter directions center during flight operations off the coast of Okinawa, Japan, Sept. 23. Jones, along with 16 other AC's, assists aircraft from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) to and from Essex. Essex is currently underway, with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) embarked, participating in Amphibious Ready Group Exercise and Special Operations Capable Exercise (SOCEX). During SOCEX, the 31st MEU is certified as Special Operations Capable, which it tells our military leaders that the Blue/Green team is capable of executing several diverse missions, from humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts, to full-scale combat operation. The Essex ARG is comprised of Essex, USS Juneau (LPD 10), and Fort McHenry (LSD43).
