Construction Continues
William Shultz, 4/21/01
I traveled up to Alameda. Dave and Keith have been at it, as I'm sure you know. The space looks wonderful, absolutely better than anything I ever lived in aboard Essex! Just some sweeping up and deck preparation and the tile work can begin. Just about all bright work is looking as though it's been kept up daily. One missing piece of compartment hardware is a standard Navy submersible pump and its cables. I may have to get that with a visit to Mare Island. Few are aboard Hornet. I saw Pete Clayton yesterday. I'm fairly sure he won't advise any grinding of the deck welds since there's been so much invested in the cleaning up and painting of the overhead. What will probably be done is to use some sort of floor filler to crown over the welds, so the tile can go down more easily. A lot of time will be spent doing the inlay work of the emblem. The room is coming together very well. I can't wait to send the next progress report. That should show green tile and the Essex emblem. It's going to look great. It looks as though we'll have a sure treasure for the Hornet and the Essex Association when the space is completed. When the Essex space is completed, Hornet will have to clean and make ready connecting space between our space and the already open for exhibit Wasp Room. Right now, the walkway is rather dark and very "decommissioned" looking.
